Spinach farmers making a good profit in Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, Dec 17: A good number of farmers in the district are making a good profit this season.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office sources, some 3,000 hectares of land have been brought under spinach cultivation in the area.

Amir Hamja of Kazipur upazila said farmers here are growing the leafy vegetable commercially.

"The venture is profitable and gives a healthy return", he added.

Bablu Pramanik of Royganj upazila said he has cultivated spinach on five decimals of land this season spending Tk 3,000.

He said, he has made profit of over Tk 13,000 by selling the item till first week of December.

On a recent visit this correspondent found farmers were passing busy time in their fields.

Each kg of spinach is selling at Tk 20 to Tk 30 in the retail market.

Spinach farming is gaining popularity among the farmers for high profit.

Spinach peasants in the district are expecting to make around Tk 20 million profit from the farming this season.

Deputy Director of DAE Md Arshad Ali said spinach cultivation is profitable for low production.

Growers should expand the farming to earn more.
