RANGPUR, Oct 26: A severe shortage of headmasters and assistant teachers in a good number of government primary schools in the district has greatly been hindering academic and administrative activities of the educational institutions.
According to district education office sources there are 1,452 government primary schools having enrolment of a huge number of students in the district. But 131 posts of headmaster and 472 posts of assistant teachers have remained vacant for long in the educational institutions, causing serious interruption in continuing different activities in those institutions.
Some schoolteachers and guardians said normal functioning of the primary schools is being seriously hampered as the posts of huge teachers have remained vacant for long.
Due to dearth of teachers it is much difficult to run teaching smoothly owing to having pressure of extra work, teachers claimed.
In this situation if any teacher has to bear the extra-burden of acting headmaster, the administration and management of the school can hardly run efficiently, as the other teachers of same rank hesitate to cooperate with him, they alleged.
It is learnt that teachers coming from different distant areas of the district do not want to continue teaching in the schools. Consequently, they are transferred to their own areas as a result the number of vacant posts is on the increase.
District Primary Education Officer Shahidul Islam said that the academic disruption in the government primary schools on account of the vacant posts has become a matter of concern. He said that the administrative tasks of those schools are being hampered.
The education official, however, said necessary steps are underway to fulfill the vacant posts of teachers. Process of appointing teachers is going on. He expressed the hope that the crisis may be resolved soon.
