Students protest Barishal civil surgeon's appointment

BARISHAL, July 26 (UNB): Students from several educational institutions on Sunday staged a sit-in in front of the Barishal Civil Surgeon's Office and later locked it, demanding the cancellation of the appointment of the district's newly appointed Civil Surgeon, Dr Md Moniruzzaman.

The protesters gathered around 10:00 am, alleging that Dr Moniruzzaman, a former leader of the Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad and an official they described as a beneficiary of the previous fascist regime, should not have been appointed to the key public health post.

They also alleged that, while serving as the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer at Gournadi Upazila Health Complex, he had faced various allegations, including abuse of authority and administrative irregularities.

They then symbolically locked the door of the office designated for him.
