BOGURA, 18: Due to favourbale weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-input, surplus murikata onion output is likely in Bogura this current season.
The basin of Jamuna, Bangalee and Nagore River is known for its grain reserves as bumper vegetable are grown here to mitigate the local demand. The farmers generally grow murikata onion in the basins after recession of the flood water and make a good profit every season.
With the release of water across the low- lying cropland, the cultivation of onion has been started with much enthusiasm this year, said farmer Abdul Quader under Sonatola upazila.
The people of the basins are dreaming of onion cultivation so women, men and teenagers are busy tending onion from very early in the morning to late at night. They are taking frequent care to get bumper yield as and fair price.
At the beginning of the month of Ashwin, the silt of the water body dries up. Then the farmers planted onion without any ploughing in the river basin. The farmers who grow the spice in the flat land, they are to plough before planting the spice.
The farmers of Dupchanchia, Gabtoly, Shajhanpur, Kahaloo, Adamdighi, Shibganj, Sherpur, Nandigram, Sonatola, Sairakandin Dhunot and sadar upazilas of the district have already planted murikata onion on
around 400 hectares of land.
The cultivation of onion is going on across the district and the target has been set to plant onion on about 1040 hectares of land. Now, after harvesting T-Aman, there is an enthusiasm to plant onion in the early harvested land.
Due to the bumper yield of onion, the highest cash crop of all these upazilas, the farmers of the area have started planting spice in a large scale, said sub-assistant agriculture officer Faridur Rahman.
Wherever you look in the field, you can see men and women as well as little boys and girls sitting in a line on the ground and planting and taking care onion cloves, he added.
Farmer Abdul Alim under Shibganj upazila said he has planted murikata onion in 13 decimal of land this year spending Tk 5000 and expecting to make over Tk 20,000 after production cost.
Deputy Director of DAE Md Dulal Hossain said that due to be more profitable, the cultivation of murikata onion is increasing every year. They are providing logistic support among the farmers to make the farming a grand success, the DD added.
