Sweet pumpkin cultivators happy over market rate

BOGURA, Apr 04: Sweet pumpkin cultivators of the district are satisfied over the present market price.

To grow the vegetable on a bigha of land farmers need Tk 2,000 to Tk 4,000 as the production cost. Profit over Tk 20,000 to Tk 25,000 can be made from the same land, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman.

A small size pumpkin is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 30, a middle-one at Tk 40 to Tk 50 and big one at Tk 100 to Tk 130 in the local market. Traders from the adjacent districts visit the area regularly to purchase the popular vegetable.

"I have cultivated the vegetable on two bighas of land investing Tk 12,500," said Anamul Hossain of Boalia village under Adamdighi upazila. The farmer said he got 1,500 pieces of pumpkin and expressed the hope to make a profit of Tk 70,000.

Deputy director of DAE Protul Chadra Sarker said pumpkin farming is popular in the area. It has a high market demand. Grower should expand its cultivation in the upcoming season.
