Cultivation of all types of vegetable has been on the rise in the region this year with a favourable weather behaviour as yet.

The farming area would be increased albeit as there is time for some of the crops, said additional director of DAE, Sylhet divisional office, Md Altabur Rahman. Some selected poor farmers were earlier given some seed and other assistance this year, he said, better price of the crops had prompted the common farmers to some uncommon crops even. Besides, the special programme for bringing arable lands under farming in the Sylhet division also played a little in this regard, the senior official added.

Zaber Ahmed, a farmer of Biswanathergaon village under Biswanath upazila, said the high price of vegetables after the repeated floods last season inspired many cultivators while some non-traditional vegetable varieties also became popular due to the better returns, he added.

A good number of farmers are also using organic fertilisers, he said, adding, the DAE provides some assistance for setting vermicompost units through some leading farmers at villages with a target to popularizing it among the new farmers.
