Sylhet farmers get a good watermelon harvest
They are happy with its high price in Ramadan

SYLHET, Mar 15: Farmers have yielded a good harvest of watermelon in Sylhet division this year with a high hope of high prices in the holy month of Ramadan.
Farmers said watermelon production is higher this season than that of last season. Its farming was badly damaged due to devastating floods in Sylhet region last year.
When contacted, Bimol Chandra Shome, additional director at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Sylhet, told The FE that farmers suffered huge losses for floods last year. So, they initiated the farming albeit earlier and managed good harvest, he said, a total of 1,233 hectares of land were brought into watermelon cultivation in Sylhet division. Of them, more than 660 hectares of land have been brought under watermelon cultivation in Sylhet district only.
The DAE supplied seeds and other inputs under the flood reconstruction & emergency assistance project (FREAP).
The farmers of Gowainghat upazila in Sylhet have reaped a good harvest, said its upazila agriculture officer Raihan Parvez.
As many as 465 hectares of land were used for the crop this season. It's almost double than the previous year's, he added.
Due to a good return, farmers are very interested in cultivating watermelon.
They start its farming in mid-November and yield starts in mid-January.
Abdul Malik, a farmer of Alirgaon village, said the yield of watermelon was very good this year. The farmers are now more interested in watermelon production.
