TANGAIL, Apr 06: Farmers of Tangail district are making a good profit by growing maize every year.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said maize cultivation has expanded in all the upazilas of the district.
Repeated abundant yield encourages the farmers to increase the production of the popular crop, DAE officials said, adding, production rate is high in the vast char areas.
Bhuapur, Sadar and Nagorpur upazilas are well-known for producing quality maize.
Some 4,056 hectares of land were brought under the cultivation of maize in the district.
"We had set a target to grow the item on 2,860 hectares of land, but growers raise the area, as it is profitable", officials added.
Donne-111, Sunshine, Nupur-123 are the most popular high-yielding maize varieties.
Some farmers said maize cultivation is easier than others crops. It saves cost as it requires less fertiliser, insecticide and irrigation.
"Moreover, we get a healthy return for high market prices", they added.
Upazila Agriculture officer of Bhuapur upazila Md Ziaur Rahman said Bhuapur is the highest maize producing upazila in the district.
Sandy char area is ideal for cultivating the crop. Growers earn handsome profit each season, he added.
A training instructor of DAE Tangail said corn is used as chicken and fish feed, fodder. It is also used to make flour.
Nargis Akhter, sub- assistant agri officer of DAE said farmers should expand the production of the item for more profit.
She suggested farming maize along with wheat and Boro.
Deputy director of Tangail DAE Mohammed Abdur Razzaque said maize is a popular crop among the grassroots growers in the district for low cost and easy procedure.
"We help the cultivators in every possible way so that they can get a good output", the official added.
