Tangail lemon growers become self-reliant

TANGAIL, Mar 02: Thousands of lemon growers in the district have become self-reliant in recent years.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Tangail, sources, lemon is being grown around 1,966 hectares of land in the district.
DAE official said Delduar upazila, Mirzapur upazila and Modhupur upazilas are well-known for producing quality lemons.
Rahmat Ali of Noyarhat village of Fazilhati union under Delduar upazila said he is growing lemon on 10 decimals of land.
The farmer said lemon production is profitable for good demand and high market prices.
Another farmer Siddiqur Rahman said he achieved a bumper lemon yield lemon for 30 decimals of land this season.
He said lemon cultivation is profitable. At present 100 pieces of lemon is selling at Tk 400 to Tk 600 in the local kitchen market.
Lemon can be grown at homestead, mainland and even on the roadside, he further said.
A good number of farmers said lemon farming requires low cost. Many landless growers in the area cultivate the item at their homestead and make handsome profit.
DAE officials said lemon cultivation is expanding in the area for high profit.
The department provides all necessary support to the growers in this connection.
