TANGAIL, Jan 16: Growers of the district are expecting a bumper production of mustard this season.
Easy cultivation and harvesting processes, lower production costs, and fair market prices during the last several years, have been encouraging the farmers of all the 12 upazilas to grow the crop every year.
Fazlu Miah, a mustard cultivator of Mamudpur village, under Delduar upazila said after harvesting Aman paddy the farmers of the area started cultivation of mustard on their lands.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Tangail sources said a total of 38,000 hectares of land was targeted for mustard cultivation in 12 upazilas of the district with a production target of 41,271 tones of mustard.
But cultivation target not achieved in the current year due to flood and heavy rain. Besides, the stagnant flood and rain water delayed to getting down from the crop fields.
As a result, many of the local farmers failed to prepare their land for mustard cultivation in time, sources added.
In this situation, total 28408 hectares of land were brought under mustard cultivation.
Of these, total 2500 hectares in Sadar upazila, 2375 hectares in Basail , 6494 hectares in Mirzapur, 680 hectares in Sakhipur, 1223 hectares in Bhuapur, 720 hectares in Kalihati, 151 hectares in Madhupur, 1370 hectares in Delduar, 178 hectares in Dhanbari, 9000 hectares in Nagarpur, 2270 hectares in Gopalpur and 1445 hectares of lands in Ghatail upazila.
Different varieties of mustard cultivated here such as Ufshi, Tori 7, B 14, and B 15. Besides, some local varieties have also been cultivated in the district, DAE sources said.
Arman Hossain, another mustard cultivator, of Baruha village under Sadar upazila said he has cultivated high yielding varities of mustard on his 2 bighas of land between the gaps of Aman and Boro paddies cultivations to make some extra profit.
