Taraganj records satisfactory turmeric production

RANGPUR, Mar 06: The turmeric cultivators of Taraganj upazila under the district are overjoyed due to an excellent yield this season.
Sources said the enthusiastic farmers gave their optimum efforts to make turmeric cultivation a success this season and eventually got satisfactory output of the spicy crop that encouraged them to bring more lands under its farming in next season.
Due to congenial weather condition and timely supply of necessary agri-inputs the growers could achieve cultivation target of the crop this season, sources informed.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) turmeric was cultivated on around 800 acres of land this season in the upazila.
Sources said cultivation of turmeric and some other spicy crops has brought financial solvency to the farmers of different areas under the upazila in recent years.
Nuru, a farmer of village Dangapara under the upazila told this correspondent that farming of spicy crops is more lucrative than cultivation of paddy and some other crops. He cultivated turmeric on around 44 decimals of land this season spending about Tk 5,000 and got 45 maunds of output which he sold at Tk 30,600.
Sabu Mia, a farmer of Baniapara village of the upazila said he has been cultivating turmeric for the last several years and earning good profit which is encouraging to others. Around 100 to 130 maund turmeric can easily be produced on per acre of land, he added.
Upazila agriculture office sources said there is no risk of massive damage or loss in turmeric farming as pest does not affect its farming.
Owing to good yield and higher market price compared to other varieties of crops its cultivation is on the rise in the upazila and its adjacent areas, sources added.
