RANGPUR, Feb 27: Some 40 houses have been devoured by river Teesta at Godown Haat of village Kolkond union under Gangachara upazila in the district during the last couple of weeks, as erosion by the river is going on ceaselessly.

Besides, many people have already lost their croplands due to river erosion, sources said.

According to sources, erosion by the river is taking destructive turn. As a result a good number of houses, croplands and other establishments near the river are facing severe threat.

Sources said about 300 families were living adjacent to Godown Haat embankment but some 100 families lost their houses and cultivable lands last year because of river erosion.

This year so far, around 40 families have lost their houses and croplands due to erosion by the Teesta.

Apprehending erosion, many people of the area are passing days in anxiety, sources informed. Locals may incur massive loss, if the situation continues for next one or two weeks, it is alleged.

"Erosion by the river gulped my house and crop lands," said Mizanur (50) of Godown Haat area. "My homesteads were devoured few days ago. Now my family members have taken refuge in temporary shelters," he added.
