Thousands suffer in absence of concrete bridge over Naikhangchhari canal

BANDARBAN, Feb 20: Due to the absence of a concrete bridge, thousands of people of Bichamara area under Naikkongchhari Sadar union of the hilly district use a bamboo-bridge risking their lives.

Sources said there are about 7,500 people living in the village and bridge over the Naikhangchhari canal is important for their communication. Locals said the authority concerned did not take any steps regarding this.

A good number of locals said hundreds of students are the worst sufferer. They have no other option but to go to school on this way. Moreover, it is difficult for the growers and traders to transport goods and produce to different areas. Due to poor marketing facility, grassroots growers do not get fair prices of their produce.

Situation gets worse in the rainy season, locals added.

Former union council member Mir Ahmad Mambar people have been suffering for long. It is an urgent issue.

Assistant teacher of Tangra Bichamara Government Primary School Saiful Islam said a good number of students live in the village. They are bound to cross the canal using the bamboo-bridge.

He said a class II student received injury while crossing the bridge a few days ago. He urged the authority concerned to take immediate steps to build a permanent concrete bridge over the canal.
