SYLHET, Sept 28: Speakers at a regional workshop in Sylhet town on Saturday laid emphasis on raising Boro paddy production in the haor region in the next coming dry season.

The DAE alongside all the agriculture-related institutions should extend all-out assistance to the cultivators with a target to achieving the goal, they said, adding, the government will provide all necessary supports in this connection.

Agriculture Secretary Md Nasiruzzaman attended the event as the chief guest while additional Secretary Sanat Kumar Saha, DAE Director general Dr Abdul Muyeed and additional director, Sylhet, Mohammad Shahjahan spoke as the special guests.

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) DG Dr Md Shahjahan Kabir presided over the day-long event.

Regional Centre of BRRI, Habiganj, organised the workshop on 'Strategy for increasing Boro paddy in haor region' at a city hotel.

BRRI chief Dr Md Mozammel Haque and Deputy Director of the DAE's divisional office Mazumder Md Ilias presented separate papers on the topic.

The speakers said the haor region is the most productive area in the country which produces 14 per cent of the paddy. Eighty per cent of the total croplands in Sylhet region are engaged in Boro production.

But the major crop suffers acute cold during the January-February and excess rains during the April-May period, causing much sufferings to the farmers. This is why selecting proper variety of paddy alongside adopting newer technology and mechanised farming should be preferred, they said.

The officials stressed varieties like BRRI Dhan-89, BRRI Dhan -92, BRRI Dhan 84, BRRI dhan-88 and BRRI Hybrid Dhan-5 etc for the region since these are short duration ones, which need below 150 days.

The chief guest said the farmers need to select the paddy variety considering the land nature, fertility and the possibility of flash flood risk etc.

The DAE officials should always provide necessary advice and inputs to the farmers, he added, short duration and flood tolerant paddy varieties should be cultivated to avert any possible loss by calamity.

He also asked the DAE officials to keep close touch with the grassroots farmers and officials for a better crop.

Steps are being taken for increasing Irrigation facilities in the region, the chief guest said.
