Tk 20 million contraband Indian sarees seized at Benapole

The importer gave false declaration to customs

BENAPOLE, Nov 11: BGB members seized a truckload of high quality Indian sarees worth Tk 20 million from a consignment of chocolates imported from India with false declaration.

Customs authorities yesterday suspended the licence of M/s. Mukti Enterprise involved in the incident.

BGB 49 Commanding Officer Lt. Colonel Selim Reza said M/s. Sonali Trading, an importer of Bagachara Bazar in Sharsha upazila of Jashore, imported one truck of 202 packages of chocolates and other goods from India with manifest number 23616.

C&F agent M/s. Mukti Enterprise submitted documents to the Customs House to clear the consignment whose customs B / E number is 48569.

Billal Hossain, deputy commissioner of customs, said as chocolate was a food item for children, the customs authorities sent samples to the BSTI office to assess the quality of the chocolate.

It will take 10 days for the certificate of quality control of chocolate to arrive in Benapole Customs House.

Therefore, the C&F agent Mukti Enterprise paid the revenue of Chocolate and applied to the commissioner not to deliver the chocolate from the port until the test report is received. The importer left 74 cartons of chocolates and took the other goods.

After receiving the test report of the chocolate the C&F agent Mukti Enterprise delivered it from the port yesterday.

According to the DC, the BGB members seized the truck (Dhaka .Metro-A-11-2653) from Benapole Bazar while it was on its way to Dhaka by picking 50 cartoons of sarees outside the Port.

Later, the BGB searched the truck and seized high quality sarees worth Tk 20 million.

The consignment of sarees along with the truck was later deposited to Benapole Customs House.

Benapole Customs Commissioner Md. Azizur Rahman said the C&F agent Mukti Enterprise applied technique and reloaded the sarees from the road outside the port instead of the chocolate cartons. The BGB seized the truck while it was being taken to Dhaka. In view of the case, the licence of Mukti Enterprise was immediately suspended.

Meanwhile, BGB members also seized one truckload of Indian sandalwood worth Tk 150 million from Navaran Satkhira Mor in Sharsha upazila of Jashore district on Tuesday.

Lt. Col Selim Reza, Commanding officer, 49-BGB said that a large quantity of Indian sandalwood was smuggled from Satkhira to Dhaka by truck.

A covered van (Dhaka Metro A-14-0563) was seized in Navaran- Satkhira area of the upazila after receiving a secret information.

Later, the covered van was searched and sandalwood weighing 1. 40 tonnes was seized.
