SYLHET, Feb 20: The work on an important road in Sunamganj district could not be completed as its contractor has gone into hiding after the fall of the Awami League-led government.
Locals apprehended that the work may not be completed even in the extended time for the much-awaited scheme.
The authorities had already paid a good amount of money to the contractor.
The contractor, however, managed drawing Tk 160 million (16 crore) although about Tk 60 million (6 crore) work is done.
About 0.5 million (5 lakh) people of the three frontier upazilas in the district use the maintain road link through the alternate road Sunamganj-Tahirpur road starting from Niamatpur point on Sunamganj-Jamalganj road to Anwarpur. It reduces 10km for linking Tahirpur.
An official admitted that the contractor already withdrawn Tk 160 million 16 crore and done about 55 per cent work.
But, many locals like Ataur Rahman of Tahirpur alleged that Sylhet AL man Abdul Hannan had bagged the job in the name of a contractor from Feni.
Any way they had been doing poor works. Since it's undone and work is being done at a snail's pace, the locals would again suffer extreme during the monsoon.
Besides, due to sub standard work, it has been damaged at places already, said some locals.
It's broken at points. They want the work be finished soon with quality works. Otherwise, the suffering would be extreme in the coming monsoon.
Some earth work done last year had also been washed away months ago, they said, adding that many ditches had also developed at places.
Officials at the R&H Sunamganj said that the contractor had already been given time till March 2025. If they fail to finish, will just face actions and they would not be allowed to compete in any future bidding. "We hope the work would be finished this time."
