Tk 800m riverside walkway scheme goes ahead in Sylhet

SYLHET, Jan 29: The Sylhet City Corportaion (SCC) has started recovering the grabbed or occupied parts on the Surma riverbank with a target to expansion of the walkway and its beautification.

The project is set to cost about Tk 800 million, informed an official adding, it would also help stopping riverbank erosion in addition to creating space for passing leisure for the city dwellers.

Already a good progress is achieved, the city mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury informed, the works has been going on in full swing.

Besides, the implementation of the project would help easing the traffic congestion on the city's busiest commercial area and wholesale markets at Kalighat, Mohajon potti, Bandarbazar etc.

Over a decade and a half ago, such walkway along with a road was established on both banks of the Surma river, but things were on a limited area.

The much-desired project would establish walkway on 3 kms on the riverbanks. It may be stated here the decision to executing the project was taken up a along with some other important ones like establishing Greenpark on the place of Sylhet's old Central Jail and five roundabouts at different places in the city.

Former finance minister AMA Muhith chaired the meeting, held in Dhaka while officials from the SCC and others were present.

These would help increasing the tourist attractions in the Sylhet divisional city, which attracts thousands of tourists from all over the country and abroad for the two renowned shrines and tourist spots like Jafflong and others, the meeting was told.
