SIRAJGANJ, Aug 28: A good number of people in the district have attained financial solvency by rearing turkey hens.

Sources said turkey rearing is gaining popularity in the area for high profit. It has become a mean to drive extreme poverty in the region.

Low cost, easy techniques and high demand and market prices encourage the village people to start the venture for more profit.

"I started rearing 25 hens at my own farm investing Tk 17,000 last year," said farmer Jalal Udding of Kazipur upazila of the district. "I have already made a profit of over Tk 30,000 this year." he added.

Rearers buy 10 to 15-day turkey chick at Tk 350 to Tk 450 per piece from the hatchery.

Meanwhile, a mature turkey hen is sold at Tk 1800 to Tk 2000 in the retail market while the wholesale rate is Tk 1500 to Tk 1600.

Many rearers said if the government provides loan facilities for the turkey farmers they would be mostly benefited.
