Turmeric harvest progressing fast in Nilphamari, Bogra

NILPHAMARI, Feb 20: Harvesting of turmeric is going on in full swing across the district. Farmers are now busy in processing the spice crop. Harvested raw turmeric need to be boiled and dried up properly before it is to be marketed. After boiling and drying five maunds of raw turmeric, the farmer get one maund (40 kg) dried turmeric which they sale in the markets. At present one maund of dried turmeric is being sold at Tk 7,000 in the markets.

Raw turmeric is also being sold in the local markets and existing price of raw turmeric is Tk 400 per maund.

Abdur Rahman, a farmer of Ramnagor union under Sadar upazila said he harvested turmeric in one bigha (30 decimal) of land where his production is 80 maunds which he would boil and dry to sale in the markets. He said he would be able to sale the dried up turmeric at an approximate total price of Tk 0.1 million while his total cost of cultivation including tillage, manure, weeding harvesting would comprise Tk 15,000 or so.

Ajmal Hossain, sub-assistant agriculture officer of DAE, said production of turmeric has been doubled due to adoption of new technology in cultivating the crop and most of the farmers have adopted that new technology.

DAE sources said this year target of turmeric cultivation in the district was in 1,710 hectares of land and production target was 10230 tonnes.

Meanwhile, our Bogra correspondent adds: A good number of turmeric peasants of the district are happy over the good yield and fair market prices of the produce this season.

Farmers of all the 12 upazilas have started harvesting the crop recently as they began cultivation from September last, said sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) official sources said turmeric cultivation requires low cost. Average 30 to 40 maunds of output can be possible from a bigha of land.

If growers apply modern method in the cropland over 50 maunds of production can be achieved, DAE officials added.
