Ultra-poor of Magura municipal area miss out on rice at Tk 10 per kg

MAGURA, Oct 23: Sale of rice at Tk10 per kg is going on in Magura. But the ultra-poor of Magura municipal area are being deprived of the benefit.

Magura district food office sources informed, as price of rice is high at present in the market, government decided to sale rice at Tk 10 per kg for the ultra-poor people.

This programme was started in the district from September 19. A total of 24781 ultra-poor people in the district are getting rice at Tk 10 per kg.

Selling rice at Tk 10 raised a wave of joy among the ultra-poor people of the district. But Magura municipality people are deprived here as the programme is not running in municipality area.

Chaina Begum, a domestic worker of Islampur area of Magura town said, "Everyday I need 4 kg rice for my family. Rice is being sold in the local market at Tk 30 per kg. Everyday rice costs me Tk 120. If I got rice at Tk 10 per kg it would save my Tk 80 per day. Though rural people are enjoying this benefit, we municipal people are deprived of it.

An OMS dealer of Magura Puratan Bazaar area Balay Kuri said, everyday at least 100 people rush to our centre for rice at Tk 10. But as government is not providing us with the rice we are failing to meet up the demand of ultra poor people of municipality area. We have appealed to food office authority but the appeal is going unheeded.

Acting District Food Controller of Magura Kamal Hossen said, "We are yet to get any instruction from our superior authority to start selling of rice at Tk 10 per kg in municipality area. If we get such instruction we must do that."
