RANGPUR, Mar 25: A section of unscrupulous fish traders are selling harmful piranha fish ceaselessly at different markets in Rangpur district, defying a ban on it.

Sources said, in 2008 the government imposed a ban on cultivation and selling of piranha, a tropical American river fish which is hostile to animals as the fish eats live animals.

But some dishonest people are cultivating the fish in their water bodies and also marketing it with the assistance of some fish traders defying the ban.

Presently piranha is being sold ceaselessly at different markets of the district including City bazar, Kamal Kachna Bazar, Mulatol Bazar, Darsona, Lalbag, Terminal Bazar, Mahiganj and CO Bazar area in the city.

The fish is being sold at Tk 100 to Tk 120 per Kg in the local markets. Very often dishonest fish traders cheat the consumers by selling Piranha to them as sea fish Rupchanda.

Narayan Chandra (50), a fish seller at Kamal Kachna Bazar area in the city told FE that they can sell the fish to the customers without facing difficulties as the law enforcing agencies very seldom conduct drive in this regard.
