Vegetable farmers happy with high market prices

JOYPURHAT, June 02: Vegetable growers of the district are happy over the high market price this season.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said over 1,730 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of varieties of vegetable this season.

Some officials said many farmers grow vegetable after completion of Boro harvest.

To ensure the smooth production, the Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) provided quality seeds among the peasants, DAE sources added.

During a recent visit to different kitchen markets in the district, this correspondent found per kg of brinjal is selling at Tk 40 to Tk 50, green chilli at Tk 45 to Tk 55, snake bean at Tk 40 to Tk 45, pointed gourd at Tk 40 to Tk 50, snake gourd at Tk 40 to Tk 50, ridge gourd at Tk 30 to Tk 40, bitter gourd at Tk 50 to Tk 60, okra at Tk 30 to Tk 40, creeper arum at Tk 40 to Tk 50 and potato at Tk 20 to Tk 22 each kg.

Besides, red spinach is being sold at Tk 20 to Tk 25 per kg and water spinach at Tk 30 to Tk 35 per kg in the local markets.

Farmer Saiful Islam of Akkelpur upazila said he cultivated okra on his field after harvesting Boro paddy.

The peasant said he is delighted over the production and present market price.
