Our correspondent from Gopalganj says that the prices of vegetables have gone up in local markets.
Bitter gourd is sold at Tk 90 to 100 a kg, but it was Tk 50 to 60 earlier. One kilogram of lady's finger is being sold at Tk 90 to 100. Earlier, it was Tk 55 to 60.
Brinjal is sold at Tk 110 to 120, but it was Tk 60 to 70 only. Potato is sold at Tk 60 to 65 per kg, earlier it was Tk 50 to 55.
One kilogram of Teasel gourd is being sold at Tk 80 to 85. It was Tk 40 to 45 only earlier.
Besides, snake gourd is being sold at Tk 60 to 70 a kg while bean (local barboti) at Tk 75 to 80.
Sweet pumpkin is sold at Tk 50 to 60 per kg, but earlier it was Tk 35 to 40. Green papaya sells at Tk 40 to 45.
A medium size of gourd (lau) is being sold at Tk 90 to 100, but it was Tk 60 to 70 only.
Water arum (medium size) is sold at Tk 50 to 60, while basil at Tk 45 to 50 a kg and cucumber at Tk 65 to 70 a kg.
Shahidul Islam, a vegetable trader of Gopalganj Bazar, told the FE that the prices of vegetables have skyrocketed due to their poor supplies.
Abdul Kadir Sarder, deputy director, agriculture in Gopalganj, told the FE that vegetables on about 704 hectares of land have been damaged by heavy rain in the district recently.
"Growers could not supply sufficient vegetables to markets, which has resulted in the abnormal increases in their prices," he said.
Arif Hossain, district marketing officer at Krishi Bipanon in Gopalganj, said if weather improves, prices of vegetables would come down.
Our correspondent from Chandpur reports that the prices of many vegetables are still high in local kitchen markets.
As winter vegetables have started to arrive in markets, prices of some vegetables have decreased somewhat.
Potato has become dear due to its sudden scarcity for the past few days. Its price has jumped to Tk 70 from Tk 55.
Green chilli sells at Tk 180 per kg while coriander at Tk 150 a kg, eggplant and dhundal at Tk 60.00 per kg and korolla at Tk 80.00 a kg.
Carrot still sells at Tk 140 per kg while long bean at Tk 80, potol at Tk 60 per kg and radish, lady's finger and chichinga at Tk 60 per kg.
Cucumber at Tk 40 per kg while arum at Tk 50, papaya at Tk 50 per kg and loti at Tk 60 per kg.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, 5,500 hectares of land would be brought into winter vegetable cultivation in Chandpur district.
He hoped that prices of vegetables would come down when winter vegetables would appear abundantly in markets.
