BOGURA, Dec 28 (BSS): The prices of vegetables in Bogura's kitchen markets have begun to decline, offering relief to consumers as the supply of winter vegetables increases in the markets.
Due to huge production, the prices of all types of winter vegetables have started decreasing in all the kitchen markets of the district.
In a week, the prices of almost all types of vegetables have come down by half which has brought relief to the market and the local people also.
Farmers said even though the prices are low now, they have made good profits on early varieties of vegetables this time. There is no fear of loss, they added.
Bogura is one of the hubs for vegetable production in the northern region. This time, the cultivation of early vegetables was delayed due to rain in the district in November. However, the yield was also high due to the good weather. Now, all types of winter vegetables are coming to the markets and prices have also started decreasing.
It was observed that the prices of all types of vegetables have dropped by Taka 20 to 25 per kilogram (Kg) compared to before while visiting Rajabazar, Fateh Ali Bazar, Colony and Khandar Bazar markets in Bogura on Saturday.
New potatoes are now being sold at Taka 40 to 50 per kg, brinjal at Taka 40, beans at Taka 40, sweet potatoes at Taka 50, bitter gourd at Taka 50, green chillies at Taka 40, radish at Taka 15, carrots at Taka 50, sweet pumpkin at Taka 30, tomatoes at Taka 70, and new onions at Taka 50 per kg.
In addition, cauliflower prices have decreased by Taka 15 to 20 per kg. Leafy greens are being sold at Taka 15 per piece. Meanwhile, the wholesale price of each vegetable at Mokam Mahasthan Hat, the largest vegetable market in Bogura, has decreased by Taka 200 to 300 per maund.
Golam Rabbani, a farmer from Pirgachha area of Bogura Sadar, said that a few days ago, the prices of vegetables were high in the market but it is reasonable in the market now.
Aleya Akhter, who came to buy vegetables in the city's Raja Bazar area, said, "Now, we can buy vegetables of our own choice as the prices of all types of winter vegetables are normal in the market."
Md. Abdul Halim, a wholesaler in Raja Bazar, Bogura, said at the moment, there is a large amount of winter vegetable production and supply in the market and the prices are normal.
Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Bogura Matlubor Rahman said the DAE has fixed a target to cultivate vegetables on 13,500 hectares of land with a production target of 3,06, 450 tonnes in the district.
This year, the target will be exceeded while the production of early-season vegetables will be about 80,000 tonnes, he added.
