WDB takes initiative to save 30,000 acres of land in Mokar Haor area

SYLHET, Feb 19: The Water Development Board (WDB) has taken a programme to save 30,000 acres of land in Mokar haor area under Baniachang upazila of Habiganj from flood.

It includes construction of 23.8 km long submersible embankment and excavation of 40 km canal and river dredging. Besides, 7 water regulators, 4 causeway and 9 irrigation inlets would also be constructed in addition to 8 box culverts on places. These would also help raising fish production, an official said.

He said irrigation facilities would also be increased to new crop areas. Works had already been started this season, the official said, adding, "It would take about two years to complete."

An official at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said when implemented the inhabitants of about 50 villages of Baniachang and Nabiganj upazilas would be benefited. Boro crops would be saved while irrigation facilities would be there for farming of different crops including Boro paddy and other dry season crops. Especially Boro paddy worth taka 300 million would produced, the official added. On the other hand fishing facilities would be expanderd for a longer period on haors.

Farmer Abdus Sattar of village Kagapasha under Baniachang upazila said the long desired project would help saving the lone crop of the region. Besides we would be able for a better yield of fish, he added, inhabitants of about 50 villages like Makalkandi, Baghahata, Bogey, Doulatpur, Jhilua, Gokhrapur etc would be higly benefited.
