Wheat cultivators in Rangpur region expect good yield this season

RANGPUR, Jan 8: Wheat plants at different areas under Rangpur agriculture region have grown well and assumed an impressive eye-catching look, signalling a good yield of the crop during the current season.
The wheat cultivators under the region are in joyous mood as they have been witnessing a congenial weather condition since the very beginning of the season which also made them optimistic about attaining an excellent production of their produce this year.
The wheat cultivators under the zone have geared up farming of the crop on around 27,052 hectares of land in five districts under the zone this season. The districts are: Rangpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Gaibandha and Nilphamari.
During a recent visit to several areas in the region this FE correspondent found the farmers busy nurturing the transplanted wheat fields with enthusiasm. The crops are getting gradually matured.
The growers are getting more interested in the cultivation of the crop in recent years after getting bumper production repeatedly due to favourable weather condition, DAE sources said.
Sobhan Mia (50), a farmer at Mirzapur village under Mithapukur Upazila in Rangpur district told The Financial Express that he cultivated the crop on one acre of land during this season and the condition of its growth is excellent. Smooth supply of water and agri-inputs such as fertilisers and pesticides has boosted its farming he also said.
Ariful Islam (40) of Laldighi village Badarganj Upazila in Rangpur district said, Tk 1200 to Tk 1500 is required to cultivate the crop on one bigha of land. He cultivated the crop two bighas of land this year and is hopeful of getting a bumper production, he added.
Deputy Director (DD) of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur SM Ashraf Ali said sufficient water supply, agri-inputs and conducive weather condition boosted up wheat cultivation in the region this year, making the farmers hopeful to achieve a satisfactory output of the crop.
The department is providing necessary advices and supports to the growers to enhance the production of the crop during the current season, he added.
