JOYPURHAT, Feb 24: The farmers of all the five upazilas of the district have started harvesting wheat.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said over 1,290 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation of the crop this season.

A good number of growers said they are expecting a good yield this year. They said if the weather remains favourable farmers will complete harvest within a few days.

Shortage of labourers is a major issue in the harvesting period. A labourer charges Tk 400 to Tk 450 per day which is high for the poor peasants. It increases production cost as well.

To plant wheat on a bigha of land the farmers have to spend Tk 7,000 to Tk 9,000 from where farmers can make a profit of Tk 34,000.

DAE officials said they encourage the growers to enhance wheat farming in the district.
