Wood apple cultivation brings solvency to Joypurhat farmers

JOYPURHAT, Oct 30: Commercial wood apple cultivation has brought financial solvency to the grassroots farmers in the district.
Bari-1 wood apple farming is gaining momentum in the district as it is high-yielding.
Farmers grow the fruit both in homestead and orchard.
Codbel contains measure calcium, iron, vitamine-B1, B2, and vitamin-c abundantly said assistance medical officer of Hamdard Laboratory Waqf, Sadar Branch Dr Sayeda Iffat Ara.
It increases strength of heart and liver, she added.
Trader Munish Hossain of Dadra area under Sadar upazila said farmers have been getting bumper production of the fruit.
In a recent visit in the different kitchen market in the district this correspondent found each sack of wood apple is being sold at Tk 2,000 to Tk 2,200 in the retail market while Tk 1,800 to Tk 1,900 in the wholesale market.
Retailer Merul Mia of Dalimaba area under Sadar upazila said, per piece wood apple is being sold at Tk 10 to Tk 40 according to its size.
Upazila agriculture official Golam Mustafa said the district has immense prospect in growing wood apple. "We encourage the grassroots farmers to expand the production of the popular fruit", he added.
