‘Gender-sensitive lawyers can establish women’s rights’

RAJSHAHI, Oct 23 (BSS): More gender-sensitive panel lawyers has become indispensable to free society from gender disparity that needed to establish rights of the women litigants, speakers told a discussion here on Saturday.

They viewed that the professional lawyers should take the responsibility of highlighting the gender- sensitive issues as their works could be an effective tool of eliminating the existing barriers to establishing gender parity.

Zero tolerance against all sorts of violence and repression against women are very important for establishing their human rights and dignity in society and gender parity has become an urgent need to this end.

The observations came in a daylong training workshop titled "Law, Human Rights and Gender" held in DASCOH Training Centre in the metropolis.

Brotee Somaj Kolyan Sangstha (BSKS) under its project 'Protecting the Vulnerable through Community Legal Services' organised the workshop for its panel lawyers under the Community Legal Services (CLS) programme funded by UKAID through Maxwell Stamp-PLC.

Main thrust of the training was to sensitising them of how to establish the fundamental rights of women litigants.

President of Advocate Bar Association Nazmus Saadat, Regional Coordinator and Legal Advocacy Officer of BSKS Advocate Ashique Iqbal, Training and Communication Coordinator Razendra Kumar Das and Legal Officers Rakseng Mankin and Mina Afroz conducted the training sessions as resource persons.

Sharing his expertise on the issue, Advocate Nazmus Saadat said the gender-based legal aid services are very helpful to remove the plights of the justice-seeking womenfolk.

"We want to eliminate gender discrimination for more women empowerment," he said adding lawyers' participation is needed to attain the cherished goal.
