5G's influence on future supply-chain management

March 05, 2022 00:00:00

Bangladesh has entered a new era of digital connectivity as the state-run mobile phone operator Teletalk launched fifth-generation (5G) of mobile internet connectivity recently. While most of us believe 5G is simply an upgrading of existing systems - a little faster, a little better - it is actually about device density and latency. For instance, 4G technology connects 10,000 people per square mile, whereas 5G enables one million to join. Without a doubt, this unprecedented access will assist the supply chain management industry to bring about greater changes.

Almost every business now continues to track and trace its items manually. If 5G technology is implemented, companies can automatically label, trace, and record all shipments. Logistics organisations can handle difficulties such as lost goods and misplaced containers by establishing a 5G-based management system. For example, with the assistance of Ericson, the Port of Livorno, Italy's largest seaport, has adopted a 5G-based management system. It has been estimated that it will help the port save around $2.95 million. Additionally, the port has reduced its carbon emissions by nearly 8.0 per cent yearly, increased workers' safety, strengthened port security, and maintained a competitive edge while achieving commercial results. So, we can also follow this model for our ports since 5G is now available in Bangladesh.
