LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

A request to create a central 'Citizen Platform'

September 11, 2025 00:00:00

Bangladesh currently lacks a central platform through which ordinary citizens can actively participate in good governance and national development. For the sake of stability and economic progress, effective communication between the government and the people is essential. To this end, the establishment of a central 'Citizen Platform' would be a timely and much-needed initiative.

Such a platform would allow citizens to share their concerns, feedback, suggestions, and complaints with the government, while also enable policymakers to identify and address priority issues in a timely manner. It could provide the opportunity for people to write letters directly to the Chief Adviser/Prime Minister, elected representatives, and the President on matters of urgent national interest. While ensuring confidentiality, these letters could then be forwarded to the appropriate offices for necessary action.

The platform should also include a mechanism for confidential reporting of sensitive online content, such as the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, nudity, pornography, or materials involving child sexual abuse, to ensure swift removal. Furthermore, it could integrate access to all national emergency helpline numbers, allowing citizens to make free calls through the website. Importantly, the government's actions taken in response to citizen concerns should also be publicly displayed on the site, thereby promoting transparency, accountability, and trust.

Introducing such a project would not only strengthen accountability but also build a stronger bridge between citizens and the government. It would empower people, uphold democratic values, and make governance more inclusive and responsive.

I sincerely urge the authorities to approve and implement the proposed 'Citizen Platform' to ensure good governance, accountability, and a stronger partnership between the government and its people.
