LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

A silent killer at home

February 25, 2026 00:00:00

Gas cylinder explosions are fast becoming a silent killer in Bangladesh, striking without warning and leaving behind death, injury, and devastation. On February 22 and 23, 2026, several gas-related explosions were reported in different parts of the country, including Dhaka and Chattogram. These incidents once again exposed the alarming risks associated with faulty gas systems, poor maintenance and a lack of public awareness. The rising frequency of such accidents demands urgent attention from both the authorities and citizens.

Recent events reveal a disturbing pattern. In many cases, explosions occurred early in the morning while families were preparing meals, often after gas had silently accumulated in enclosed spaces overnight. A simple spark from a stove or even an electrical switch was enough to trigger catastrophe. These tragedies show how invisible gas leaks can turn deadly within seconds.

A primary cause is the widespread use of substandard or poorly maintained cylinders and accessories. Faulty regulators, worn-out hoses, and expired cylinders frequently lead to leakage. Many households remain unaware of these risks, and regular safety checks are rarely conducted. Illegal or poorly installed gas connections further heighten the danger, especially in buildings constructed without proper oversight. Poor ventilation, particularly during late winter when doors and windows remain closed, allows leaked gas to accumulate indoors.

Preventing such disasters requires collective responsibility. The authorities must enforce stricter monitoring and regular inspections, while households should routinely check equipment, ensure proper ventilation, and turn off gas supplies after use. If gas odor is detected, immediate ventilation and avoidance of electrical switches are essential.

Gas cylinder explosions are not inevitable accidents-they are preventable tragedies. Without decisive action and greater awareness, this silent threat will continue to claim innocent lives.
