LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

A vital shield under threat

March 08, 2025 00:00:00

Bangladesh stands on the front lines of climate change, already grappling with rising sea levels, devastating floods, and increasingly unpredictable weather. A key factor exacerbating these challenges is deforestation. The unchecked destruction of our forests through unregulated logging, rapid urban expansion, and encroachment is stripping away vital natural defences.

The Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, acts as a giant shield against storms and rising tides. Yet, this invaluable ecosystem is facing grave threats. Illegal logging, industrial development, and the overarching impacts of climate change are steadily eroding the Sundarbans' protective capacity. The continued loss of this natural shield will leave Bangladesh even more vulnerable to the ravages of extreme weather events.

The time to act is now. Immediate and comprehensive reforestation programmes are critical to restore what has been lost. In tandem with these efforts, the government must implement and enforce stringent conservation policies to safeguard our remaining forests. Moreover, collaboration with local communities is essential. Encouraging sustainable land use practices and empowering local stewardship will ensure the long-term preservation of these critical ecosystems.

The future of Bangladesh's resilience against climate change depends on our commitment to protecting our forests.
