Alarming rise of diarrhoea patients

April 02, 2022 00:00:00

The number of diarrhoea patients is rising day by day in Dhaka city. The International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) is reportedly struggling to tackle the diarrhoea patients and has had to set up tents on its premises to accommodate them. A contemporary has recently reported that breaches in Dhaka WASA's supply system have been the main reason behind the outbreak. If so, it is really an alarming piece of news.

The WASA is the sole source of water in Dhaka city. But people are observing with concern that in past several years, the DWASA has miserably failed to supply safe water to its consumers. In many cases, it has been alleged that sewage water seeps into WASA pipelines and gets mixed with supply water. Most of the Dhaka dwellers boil supply water before drinking it. Despite the fact, a number of people are contracting severe diseases like diarrhoea and cholera. The government should take this seriously and investigate into the matter. What we want is a guarantee of getting drinkable water from the DWASA.
