Auto-rickshaw dilemma
May 08, 2025 00:00:00
From the narrow lanes of Rampura and Banasree to the main roads of the capital, battery-powered auto-rickshaws and other unauthorised three-wheeled vehicles now roam freely. Despite a High Court ban and the lack of any legal registration, these vehicles continue to operate day and night, blatantly disregarding the law.
These unregulated rickshaws have become a new hazard on our roads. They frequently slip into the paths of buses, trucks, and motorcycles, increasing the risk of accidents. At the same time, traffic congestion in Dhaka has reached an alarming level. As if the intense heat and prolonged power outages weren't enough, these vehicles continuously charge their batteries-putting additional strain on an already overburdened electricity supply.
It is high time for the authorities to take decisive action. To restore order on our roads and alleviate pressure on the power grid, the operation of illegal battery-operated auto-rickshaws must be brought to a swift end.
