Avert elephant-human conflict
February 20, 2025 12:00:00
Elephant-human conflict has persisted for a long time in the mountainous regions of Bangladesh and its adjacent forest areas. Humans are clearing forests for livelihoods, making way for settlements and farming, while elephants, losing their natural habitats, are entering localities in search of food. This often results in clashes, leading to devastating consequences for both elephants and humans.
Despite years of conflict, no effective solution has yet been thought of. Deforestation forces elephants to attack villages, destroy crops and houses, and, in some cases, kill people. In response, angry villagers retaliate, leading to deadly encounters. As a result, both sides suffer-villagers, who are already impoverished, face destruction, while elephants are pushed closer to extinction.
Establishing sufficient corridors for elephants, ensuring alternative food sources, and implementing security measures for local communities are essential to avoid this conflict. Additionally, raising awareness and promoting coexistence strategies will help safeguard both the livelihoods of mountain communities and the balance of nature.
