Ban battery-run rickshaws in the capital
April 25, 2025 00:00:00
Dhaka is already overwhelmed by severe traffic congestion, and the unchecked rise of battery-powered auto-rickshaws is making the situation even worse. These vehicles, operating without registration or regulation, are contributing significantly to the city's transport chaos.
Many of these rickshaws are driven by underage, untrained operators who routinely ignore traffic signals and drive recklessly. Sudden stops, abrupt turns, and unpredictable behaviour have become a daily hazard, increasing the risk of road accidents and endangering pedestrians and other commuters.
According to the Road Transport Act, battery-powered rickshaws are not permitted to operate in the capital. Yet, they continue to flood the streets unchecked. This has not only caused frustration among licensed transport operators but also immense suffering for the general public. These vehicles disregard designated routes and pick-up/drop-off points, further disrupting traffic flow and creating disorder.
If this issue continues to be neglected, traffic congestion will worsen, and the quality of life in Dhaka will further deteriorate. It is essential to restore discipline to the city's transportation system for the safety, comfort, and well-being of its residents. The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), law enforcement agencies, and all relevant stakeholders must take immediate and decisive actions to ban the operation of battery-powered rickshaws in Dhaka.
