Bloodshed at Gaza

May 17, 2018 00:00:00

IT'S a matter of great regret that over 60 Palestinians were killed in clashes on Monday when Israeli troops opened fire on Gaza protesters. The violence along the border took place as the United States opened its new embassy in Jerusalem. It was the bloodiest for Palestinians since the 2014 Gaza conflict.

After being elected as the US President, Donald Trump took a number of controversial decisions and his decision to shift the US embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv was, no doubt, a misjudged decision and yet another product of his unsound mind. The decision not only irked the Arabs and Americans alike, but also the sensible people around the globe in general. Thousands of Gaza residents turned out the next day for the funerals of Palestinians killed by Israeli troops only a day earlier while on the Gaza-Israel border with the Israeli forces prepared to face the expected final day of a Palestinian protest campaign.

The demonstrators in Tel Aviv emphasised that most of the Palestinians who were shot and killed in the recent violence were young and unarmed. The latest embassy relocation decision aside, Trump's other debatable decisions include imposition of restrictions on six Muslim countries to enter the US territory, cancelling the popular Obama Healthcare service, building a wall between USA and Mexico border, withdrawal from climate change fund of Paris Protocol and unilateral withdrawal from six-nation nuclear pact with Iran. The peace-loving world denounced his actions and condemned the heartless killings and bloodsheds.
