BTCL land phones should go wireless

ONCE land phones were the only means of telecommunication for people. Demand for land phones was also very high and people had to wait for a few years in some cases to obtain a land phone connection. Thanks to cell phone operators who appeared on the centre stage of communication with the most convenient mode of telephone connection without cable. Today wherever we go in Bangladesh or elsewhere in the world we find cell phones gradually taking over the telecom sector.

New products with advanced technology and software updates are released several times a year by different brands. It is no surprise, therefore, that mobile phones tend to be considered as the only media for communication among people and organisations and land phones lost much of their attraction and market share in interpersonal communication. In my office, we have a landline phone but no one uses it. In this way land phones have become almost redundant and we can not send SMS to friends and relatives or listen to music or browse internet. I think the government should close down landline service as it will be difficult for the state-owned organisation to survive in the present market situation and T&T Ministry should adopt new technology by going wireless, bring diversification and change with the time.
