LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Building an inclusive society

February 13, 2025 00:00:00

Despite the existence of laws aimed at protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, social stigma and inadequate implementation continue to marginalise this vulnerable group. Many individuals with disabilities face barriers in accessing education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. In schools, a lack of inclusive facilities often leads to the exclusion of disabled students, depriving them of essential learning experiences. In the workplace, discrimination prevents many from securing jobs, despite their qualifications and potential. Additionally, inaccessible healthcare services further exacerbate the struggles of persons with disabilities, limiting their access to necessary treatments and rehabilitation support.

Moreover, public spaces are often inaccessible, further isolating those with mobility challenges. This not only limits their participation in society but also perpetuates a cycle of poverty and dependency. Public transport systems remain largely unfriendly to individuals with disabilities, making it difficult for them to travel for work, education, or medical care. The absence of sign language interpreters and assistive technologies in essential services also hinders the full inclusion of people with disabilities in daily life.

Advocating for disability rights is essential for building an inclusive society. Greater enforcement of existing laws and increased awareness are crucial in combating stigma. It is imperative to implement disability-friendly infrastructure, inclusive education policies, and employment quotas to ensure equal opportunities for all. By fostering an environment where everyone can thrive, communities become stronger, and individuals are empowered to contribute meaningfully.
