Challenges facing SMEs

May 06, 2026 00:00:00

The Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are regarded as the backbone of the Bangladesh economy. Although SMEs contribute significantly to the national economy in terms of employment and GDP, they face numerous challenges in terms of growth and sustainability, despite the growing trend towards the use of digital technologies.

Even though social media marketing and mobile banking have provided greater opportunities for reaching customers and carrying out transactions, several other challenges still pose threats to the growth of many small and medium enterprises. One such problem is the unavailability of finance, as SME owners often cannot access loans from formal banks due to stringent procedures and high interest rates.

In addition, increased competition in digital markets is creating saturation for SMEs, as a result of which they are unable to sell their products easily. This is largely due to the fact that most SME owners lack adequate knowledge of branding, data analysis and digital marketing.

Logistical issues constitute another major challenge facing small and medium enterprises. Addressing these problems requires more than just encouraging the adoption of technology. It also requires streamlining the SME loan process, capacity building in digital marketing and branding, and improving logistical infrastructure. Partnerships between the public and private sectors can help create sustainable systems that support SME development.

For Bangladesh to become resilient in the future, providing SMEs with access to technology and infrastructure must no longer remain optional but become a necessity.
