Checking exam scripts of public exams

May 20, 2019 00:00:00

A Bangla daily reports that 16 students of English version of Ideal School and College, Motijheel, Dhaka have obtained less than 80 marks in English first paper in SSC whereas they got A plus (80 or more than 80) in all other subjects. Surprised with the result, these students have applied to education board for re-evaluation of their English first paper scripts through their principal Dr. Shahan Ara Begum.

These students have scored between 55 and 64 in English first paper whereas 80 or more than 80 in English second paper.

We hope the candidates will get a revised result for English first paper. During re-evaluation, the education board checks whether marks of different answers of the script were added properly, whether every answer is evaluated, whether the score obtained is recorded in OMR (Optical Mark Reader) sheet properly and whether the circles of the OMR sheet is filled up in a correct manner.

During the second time evaluation, a candidate's exam script is not given to a fresh examiner to recheck the copy, which should have been the practice. In that way, performance of the aggrieved students could be judged better.

If exam scripts are evaluated properly in the first stage, hundreds of candidates would not have to apply for re-evaluation. We urge the authority to make the task of checking exam scripts more attractive for teachers. Every examiner--experienced or new ones-- should attend the training, arranged by the education board each year, to know how to evaluate scripts. Online training to equip teachers to check scripts, which is provided by the boards besides face- to- face training, is never enough. Payment for checking exam scripts should be given at the earliest to teachers so that they are motivated.

Examiners need to be very careful while evaluating scripts of examinees. We expect exam scripts of aggrieved students will be evaluated by efficient/experienced teachers of the subject.
