Close down illegal brick kilns
December 01, 2024 00:00:00
The environmental destruction caused by brick kilns is alarming. Despite having policies for constructing and operating brick kilns in the country, these regulations are often disregarded, leading to the proliferation of illegal brick kilns. Many of these have been operating for years, such as those in Brahmanbaria and Thakurgaon districts, which is deeply disappointing.
These illegal brick kilns lack valid documentation, approval from the Department of Environment, and certification for brick burning. According to the law, no one is permitted to produce bricks or operate a kiln without the Department of Environment's approval.
The immediate closure of illegal brick kilns is imperative. Those that have been operating for years must be swiftly evicted, and stricter monitoring should be enforced for legal brick kilns to ensure compliance with regulations. Protecting rivers, reservoirs, and canals from further degradation is crucial. It is hoped that the Department of Environment and local authorities will take prompt and decisive action to address this issue.
