Crucial role of sports in youth development

October 11, 2025 00:00:00

A recent survey reveals that approximately 75 per cent of students in Bangladesh who regularly engage in sports are more mentally stable and confident. About 60 per cent show improved leadership skills, time management, and teamwork. In contrast, students with minimal sports participation often struggle with stress and lack focus. This clearly demonstrates that sports are not just about physical fitness, they play a vital role in developing mental and social skills.

Sports strengthen youth physically and mentally. Regular practice enhances fitness, boosts immunity and improves focus and patience. Participation also teaches discipline, responsibility, and time management. Team sports, in particular, foster cooperation, an understanding of each other's strengths and weaknesses and the ability to work together toward common goals.

Moreover, sports help reduce stress. Even in competition, students learn to accept victories and defeats gracefully. Leadership qualities are nurtured on the field, including decision-making, coordination, and staying calm under pressure. Despite limited opportunities in Bangladesh, students who participate regularly become self-reliant, disciplined, resilient, and well-prepared for life's challenges.

To fully empower youth, schools and colleges must expand sports facilities, clubs, and training programmes. Teachers and guardians should actively encourage participation. Sports build not only the body but also the mind and character. With proper guidance and opportunities, our youth can grow into healthy, responsible, and leadership-ready citizens.
