LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dark side of our education system

May 22, 2025 00:00:00

"The pressure is too much for me to handle. I can't take it anymore." These were the final words in Dhrubajit's diary, a student who recently took his own life, blaming the country's education system for his unbearable mental distress. His tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the immense pressure placed on students and the urgent need for systemic reforms to prioritize mental health and well-being over academic performance.

They say education illuminates one's path, guiding individuals toward righteousness and wisdom. However, our education system often seems like an oppressive burden, stifling students' spirits and, tragically, driving some to take their own lives. Last year, at least 310 students died by suicide. According to a survey, 49 per cent of them were school students - a deeply disturbing statistics.

Education plays a crucial role in a student's life and is often seen as the ultimate measure of success. In our society, the prevailing belief is that academic excellence guarantees a brighter future. As a result, high expectations from loved ones and society create an invisible fear in students. Regardless of their academic performance, they prioritize education above all else. Yet, instead of focusing on true understanding, many overthink and grow increasingly anxious about their future.

Although the purpose of education is simple, we tend to complicate it. From average students to top performers, all experience anxiety about their studies. This mental pressure often prevents them from exploring interests beyond the syllabus, ultimately stifling their creativity.

This dark side of our education system must be addressed. We cannot allow our lives to become completely dependent on academic achievement. It is essential to normalise and broaden our perspective on education - otherwise, many more young lives may be at risk.
