Deplorable road conditions in Dhaka
June 23, 2025 00:00:00
The condition of Dhaka city's roads is a major source of concern as they continue to deteriorate. Although millions of people travel on these roads every day, the poor state of the infrastructure has made it hazardous for both drivers and pedestrians. Road users frequently suffer from a range of difficulties.
Countless major highways and small lanes across the city are riddled with potholes, damaged pavements, and uneven surfaces. Pedestrians often trip or fall due to the lack of safe walking routes. Elderly people and children are particularly at risk. Drivers, too, face serious challenges. Motorcycles, private cars, CNGs, and rickshaws are all subjected to constant jolts from the damaged roads. Even after short journeys, passengers report physical discomfort from the abrupt and frequent shaking. For patients travelling to medical facilities, such conditions can be dangerous and even life-threatening.
The situation worsens significantly during the rainy season. Potholes become invisible as they fill with rainwater, leading to an increase in accidents.
Citizens are increasingly frustrated by this persistent cumbersome issue. Many wonder how the roads of a major city could be allowed to fall into such a state of neglect. Despite repeated government assurances about road improvements, the current condition reflects a lack of attention and poor management. Unless immediate and long-term measures are taken, residents of Dhaka will continue to suffer daily. Road maintenance and repairs must be prioritised to ensure safe and comfortable travel for all.
