Deprived freedom fighters

February 10, 2019 00:00:00

Valiant freedom fighters brought us independence. The living among them and their families get certain facilities from the government.

In order to enjoy these benefits, freedom fighters have to collect certificates. There are some people who have collected freedom fighters' certificates adopting unfair means. Many genuine freedom fighters, however, did not get certificates and so they are deprived of their rights and cannot even lead normal lives.

Julfikar Ali Tipu (65), a visually impaired man who lives in Shempur area of Bhola Sadar Upazilla, is one such deprived freedom fighters. His one eye was damaged during the liberation war and another one was also damaged after a few years. All necessary papers for his freedom fighter certification have been prepared. But his recognition has been obstructed due to bureaucratic complications. He believes that one day -- before the end of his life -- he will get his freedom fighter cerfiticate.

The Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, in parliament on February 07, said that more than 20 thousands fake freedom fighters were removed from the freedom fighters' list in recent years.

So, I urge the minister to continue his steps to honour our liberation heroes by recognising actual freedom fighters.
