LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dholaikhal, the machine hub

February 14, 2025 00:00:00

Dholaikhal is one of Dhaka's most significant commercial and historical areas. Over time, it has transformed from a river into an industrial hub. This area is a major centre for manufacturing, renowned for producing industrial equipment, machinery, and car parts. However, alongside its economic importance, several issues have emerged, causing serious inconvenience to locals and pedestrians.

Numerous businesses along Dholaikhal's main roads stock a variety of mechanical parts, which often spill onto footpaths and even roadways, obstructing traffic for both vehicles and pedestrians. Severe traffic congestion is a daily occurrence due to the combination of heavy vehicular movement and scattered machinery on the already narrow roads. As a result, residents, students, and office workers face untold difficulties navigating the area.

The situation is further exacerbated by ongoing road excavations for utility services such as gas, water, and electricity. These construction projects, often delayed, lead to prolonged disruptions, with muddy roads and excessive dust adding to the inconvenience. Unplanned development and inadequate transport infrastructure further compound the problem.

A prompt and effective solution is essential. The authorities must enforce strict regulations to ensure that business owners clear mechanical parts from the streets and maintain smooth traffic flow. Additionally, utility service work should be completed within the designated time frame to prevent unnecessary delays. The authorities concerned must take decisive action to preserve Dholaikhal's heritage while ensuring a well-organised, traffic-free environment.
