Dowry and Baisakhi's tragic death

February 27, 2025 00:00:00

Dowry remains a deep-rooted social disease, continuing to claim the lives of many women. The recent murder of Maria Sultana Baisakhi in Khulna is yet another horrifying reminder that this practice goes beyond financial oppression-it is costing lives.

According to her family, Baisakhi endured constant abuse from her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. Despite multiple payments, the torture did not stop, ultimately leading to her brutal murder. Sadly, many such stories remain unheard.

The authorities must take swift action to ensure justice for Baisakhi. While the main accused are absconding, law enforcement must prioritize their arrest. Strict legal action will not only deliver justice but also send a strong message that dowry-related violence will not be tolerated.

Although the Dowry Prohibition Act was enacted in 1980, weak enforcement has allowed dowry practices to persist. Stricter implementation is necessary, including anti-dowry cells in police stations, fast-track trials, and public awareness campaigns.

Society also has a crucial role to play. Families must resist dowry pressures, and attitudes toward daughters must change. Encouraging economic independence for women will empower them to stand against such injustices.

Baisakhi's tragic death highlights the urgent need for action. The nation must unite to eradicate this cruel practice once and for all.
