Easing payment for Bangladesh students abroad
August 26, 2020 00:00:00
The Bangladesh Bank has relaxed rules to send money to Bangladeshi students who are struggling for enrolment with foreign institutions during the coronavirus crisis. The measure is taken to facilitate admission to overseas online courses. Many Bangladeshi students had struggled on the campus throughout the world in the past when families could not send money due to restriction in transferring foreign exchange. Recently, the central bank made it easier for banks to transfer money meant for academic fees including boarding and lodging, health insurance, and incidental expenses of Bangladeshi students.
However, this problem needs a permanent solution. A Bangladeshi student cannot send, without the central bank's permission even US$20 for receiving some important papers from foreign educational institutions. The billions of dollars that are siphoned off from Bangladesh are done definitely not through students. Most students who take foreign education even earn higher amount and send many times more money back home.
